WE DIDN’T SHOW UP TO OUR 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY
A few summers ago, our 2009 album See Mystery Lights turned ten years old. At the time, we were working on the release of Chain Tripping and this momentous anniversary passed us by. But we owe a lot—arguably, everything—to See Mystery Lights. When DFA Records released that album, we very quickly went from scrappy house shows to huge festival stages around the world. It was the summer of MP3 blogs and Pabst Blue Ribbon and indie sleaze. Obama had just been elected president. Claire still bleached her hair out of the box and didn’t know about toner yet.
Ten years is a long time. It’s also the typical length of an indie record deal.
See Mystery Lights is old, and so are we. But hey, now we own it.
In fact, we recently got nearly all of our masters back from DFA. We own See Mystery Lights, Shangri-La, Plastic Soul, Second Summer, Le Goudron, and all their companion remixes. To celebrate, we did some data entry.
YOU GOTTA KEEP ‘EM COMPILATED 🎵
We’ve digitally repackaged our favorite remixes, live sessions, B-sides, and dub edits from the DFA Years into two special compilations, out now:
See Mystery Lights: Remixes & B-Sides
and
Is there another band in the universe that has been remixed by Andrew WK, Jamie xx, DNTEL, Joe Goddard, and Max Tundra? We’d like to meet ‘em.
And now when you stream any of the albums we own, 100% of those fractional pennies go to us.1 For the first time! The music business, am I right?!

WATCH WORLDS BURN
Claire co-edited a science fiction anthology called Terraform: Watch Worlds Burn. The book is out August 16th with MCDxFSG Originals. She’ll be hosting book launch events in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and New York in August! Follow Claire @theuniverse to stay in the loop.
STAY TUNED FOR OVERBOOGIE
We’ve been hard at work in our backyard studio on a new collection of songs, and are filming a truly epic music video for the lead single this week with Kailee McGee, who you may remember as the director of the music video for our song “Shame.”
Speaking of Kailee, we designed the titles and poster for her excellent short film, The Idea of a You, which you can watch on Nowness.
NOW SCREENING: THE COMPUTER ACCENT
Our documentary, The Computer Accent, is playing festivals around the world. At the end of August it’ll open Ambulante Film Festival in Mexico City, and we’ll be there to introduce it, answer questions, and perform our album Chain Tripping from front to back. And we have some very exciting news to share soon about very special San Francisco and New York events. Hang tight.
LET’S GET PHYSICAL
We also came into some vinyl from DFA, which we’ve added to Bandcamp. The limited-edition 7” singles have all sold out, but we have the last remaining copies of deluxe LP version of Shangri-La! Two LPs, four nesting dust jackets—an LP so complicated to produce that we simply had to film an unboxing video to explain it.
DIGEST THIS, DEAR READER
If you made it this far, please write and tell us what you’re reading or listening to right now. Jona just finished John Waters’ first novel, Liarmouth (★★★★☆), and Claire loved Everything I Need I Get From You (★★★★★) by Kaitlyn Tiffany.
Love,
Claire & Jona
It takes 78 streams on Tidal, 128 on Apple Music, 249 on Amazon Music, 315 on Spotify, 752 on Pandora, and 1,250 on YouTube Music to earn $1.00.
I haven't enjoyed a remix album this much since further down the spiral. Thanks for bringing me back to one of my all time favourite albums See Mystery Lights.
I’m listening to nightcore with the windows up.
