From March through May of 2020, we recorded and released cover songs at a rate of roughly one per week. Quarantine was new; we thought being hyper-productive would be a helpful way for us to manage our unexpected surplus of time, and making covers was a way to remember the old world, our influences and musical community.
We made music videos for nearly every song, too—stop-frame animations done in paper collage and plasticine, video essays about our empty city, machine vision tweaks, and other no-budget experiments (by the time summer rolled around, we switched gears, focusing instead on fundraising for local and national social justice organizations).
We’ve put together our early-quarantine cover songs in album form; Sub Versions is now available on streaming platforms (Apple Music, Spotify, & others) as well as on Bandcamp. We’re donating 100% of the proceeds from digital sales of the Bandcamp release to One Fair Wage’s emergency fund for tipped workers.
