Hey footageheads, sharpen your oversized novelty pencils because it’s time to mark your calendars for fun!!
We’re premiering an hourlong video mix of trash clips, regional children’s television, unhinged commercials, doctored film cut-ups, and other found favorites live next Tuesday, February 15th on the Museum of Home Video, a weekly live show hosted by our friend Bret Berg.
Bret is one of the best repertory film programmers in the country, and when the pandemic shuttered theaters he built a community on Twitch around the appreciation of arcane televisual media—culling from his petabyte archive of video oddities to highlight public access freaks, Barbara Streisand’s nail fashions, vintage HBO promos, unbelievable live performances, local news biffs, and “Fasterpiece Theater” cut-downs of direct-to-DVD debris.
We watch the Museum of Home Video every Tuesday and are so, so excited to pierce the cathode membrane and present our own video mixtape.
We’re calling our segment Drek. What is Drek? Drek is the media flotsam floating around your brain. It’s that one bizarre line read from a movie you watched 8,000 times when you were twelve that percolates up into your consciousness randomly while you’re doing the dishes. It’s the recurring bit from the commercial for a local pizza chain that made all your high school friends crack up. It’s the early 2000’s sci-fi stinker you saw in theaters three times. It’s the media that makes you who you are! Everyone’s got some Drek.
No spoilers, but our Drek includes: an SNL grunge meditation, wind chime zen, gonzo swears, a Chris Farley time-loop, a confusing pair of Australian commercials (shoutout to WOC-heads), a special All-American Bredit* of the genius documentarian Rick Sebak, and a truly baffling segment I guess we’re calling Korn-again Kristians. It’s a wild ride.
*A “Bredit” is a Bret Berg-style edit of a piece of media in which all but one word or phrase is removed. See 200 Christmases in 2 Minutes.
Tune into the Museum of Home Video Twitch channel LIVE NEXT WEEK—Tuesday, February 15th 2022 at 7:30 PM Pacific Time for the premiere! We’ll be live in the chat answering your questions, defending our lives, and expanding the jokes.

Claire & Jona
PS - We’ve been hard at work on a squillion other things as well and can’t wait to share a big YACHT announcement at the end of the month. Quick recap: Claire wrote an incredibly cinematic piece about a long-lost phone phreaker named Susy Thunder for The Verge, Jona and Rob scored the Wild Things Podcast for Apple TV+ (episodes air on Wednesday), and a new single is imminent. Lastly, can you tell Jona is reading Pattern Language?
Do I need to wear my Buzz Rickson MA-1 or is the dress code casual?
Some of the drek in my head: 80s jingles (By mennen, whatchamacallit ahahhhhh...). I miss a good jingle
